ODWALLA

Odwalla was this quirky little juice company that prided itself on NOT pasteurizing their product...until they got contaminated and a little girl died from EColi poisoning and they did a $6.5m recall which brought them down-and almost out.

"Within just five weeks of the recall, Odwalla had initiated an entirely new method of juice production called flash pasteurization -- a surefire method of killing bacteria with heat. On December 5, Odwalla brought back its apple juice -- now produced under stringent guidelines approved by the FDA.

For Odwalla, instituting flash pasteurization was more than just a quick fix for a dangerous problem; it was admitting that the company's founding principles were wrong. Greg Steltenpohl had built the company on a promise of absolute freshness and insisted that pasteurization stripped juice of its taste and nutrients.

Odwalla originally believed that it could avoid harmful bacteria in its juicing process by passing along its high standards to fruit growers and handlers. Odwalla instructed its suppliers to harvest only tree-picked fruit that had not fallen to the ground. That plan failed when a batch of contaminated apples reached Odwalla's production facility in Dinuba, California."

Hmmmmm. Now it I were into conspiracys, how easy would this been to have pulled off? Huh? Come on~ think. But hey, not me.

Heat DOES kill nutrients. Heat DOES kill bacteria. Heat is the only way the FDA was going to let them continue, so they caved in, sucked it up, and now are conservatively doing 90m a year... Not bad for 3 surfers that started by juicing in the back of a VW at the beach.

And what THIS article doesn't tell you, but the following one will...

Odwalla is owned by Coca Cola.

You have to wade through the anti-establishment THEY are destroying the world tone and scan for some interesting "bedmates". They call it the corporate takeover of the organic market. Well-normally I might discount them as radical chest thumpers way into conspiracy theories. Except when you start realizing that the bigger the Daddy that is pulling the strings, the less truth there really is on the label.

"Fresh Samantha, a Maine juice brand that merged with Odwalla in May 2000, "has already begun reducing its fresh-fruit content by boosting the water content--a way to make juices cheaper and longer-lasting," according to Bill Sipper, marketing vice-president of the Ultimate Juice Company."

Sort of interesting that Odwalla was breaking the "food rules" by insisting on NOT pasteurizing...
And it really ruined them. Estimates say they would be hitting upwards of 60m by 2000 on their own, on the growth curve they were on.
But then they got brought down, slapped hard, had to admit they were wrong, and got bought out...sounds too too familiar doesn't it, especially when you follow the money path. Hit them right in their own motto. And a little girl died. Gotta scar you if you have a heart eh?

Ah well...reading between the lines can be hard on the eyes. Me? I'm staying out of anything packaged for our convenience these days. It's not good for my health!

Thanks, Joy. I knew you'd get down to the bottom of the story. No wonder I've felt a little indecisive with the Odwalla. Unfortunately, at this point in my life convenience is a necessity, so it's either a packaged product like Odwalla or nothing.

Yeah I know exactly what you mean! And that's where they get us. I'm back to organic bananas myself! :)

So, throwing a bunch of fruit and some flaxseed oil and some hemp seed in the blender wouldn't work as a quick morning meal? I dont' usually have to run right out the door-how about everyone else-what are you eating for breakfast?
