SWEET POTATO - YAM!?

Oh Jac I here you!
I had the best dinner tonight! I boiled a big sweet potato until it was really soft. The dark red ones. The skin just peeled off when it was done. Soft. It looked so good! I gotta say, this is not tasty raw.
Anyway, it was soft enough that I mashed it with my fork. I stirred in 2 tbs of UDOS oil, and then raisins, ginger, onion, s&p and fresh parsley. I cut up some avocado, and some mango and wowie! I was in heaven! The UDOS though-yum. I was going to drink the oil, and then this little voice said "give it to me..." ok! :) Tony had marinated some mushrooms too and I was thnking of Pam-I added some to my medly and it was so good! :) Such color, such texture, such divine combinations. Oh and some pine nuts. It was a feast I tell ya!

Oh! Someone help me! I'm about to be overcome by my own yellowness. I want to understand the difference between sweet potatoes and yams. Is there one? I thought yams were orange/red and sweet potatoes yellow/white. I've been told that sweet potates are better than yams. BUT I LOVE yams. The orange ones that is. Does it matter? Of course not, but the Yellow in me wants to know, we are all about categories you see. Does anyone have an opinion on this?

Joy, that recipe sounds absolutely delicious! The Udos oil, brilliant, raisins for sweetness, brilliant, everything sounds so good. I'm going to have it for dinner tonight!!! I have some pine nuts. It sounds great. Thank you for sharing!

I think you are right Rebecca, sweet potatoes are more white/yellow and yams are the orange or deeper red....I love yams, I could eat those babies at every meal...I love mine baked, then the rich sugar of the yam, carmelizes, then mix in some carmelized onions, oh baby!!!!!
It definitely isn't Raw but Rawish...lol
Hmmm, that sounds good for dinner tonight...I have to say I do love the yams raw, they are way yummmy...so are parsnips good raw...
Must be hungry as well....

Isn't that funny, the foods that aren't raw, like a baked yam, and simmered raw veggie soup, are now sort of like cheating a little bit. It cracks me up. Cheating used to be a double cheeseburger with fries and a Medium Frosty and a good healthy meal was a baked yam. Now "cheating" is a baked Yam. I love it. It's all relative isn't it? I don't mind it when the center doesn't get quite cooked on a baked yam. I might like yams raw, I should give it a more serious try.

The yellow in me wanted to know too, and I found conflicting stories. When in doubt sort for the COLOR! I love the deep red ones. Call them what you will, no one seems to really be sure! The darker skined, skinnier ones or the lighter skinned fat ones? Well, darker skin, darker inside. Simple.

Try broiling them after rubbing the skins with olive oil, 8 min if I remember, maybe a bit longer. Oh but reallly good! the UDOS oil instead of butter was so great!

You might try marinating the yams, or partially cooking them, but in general potatoes are one of those things that digest better cooked. Our bodies have a hard time breaking them down raw, and the nutritional value is different. Overall, cook your potatoes, and use oil on them or other veges.

It IS funny how we have reframed eating isn't it??? I love it!
